After the museums close their doors to the public, your visit culminates with a special invitation from a curator of the Ethnological Museum who will share their immense knowledge of the collection. Enjoy private VIP dining in the Vatican in refined elegance among its priceless treasures.

  4. Day 4

Renaissance Florence and on to Monteriggioni.

Take the autostrada north to Renaissance Florence. Accompanied by an art expert, venture inside the famous Accademia Gallery to admire Michelangelo’s original statue, David. From there, see the cathedral, campanile and the baptistery, adorned with the Gates of Paradise. Walk on to Piazza della Signoria with its open-air gallery of Renaissance sculpture. There is time to shop for Florentine leather or gold before continuing to your elegant Tuscan villa near the walled town of Monteriggioni. After spending two days in the metropolis of Rome, your villa resort will be a welcome retreat. Rest in the shade of the lush, verdant gardens, swim in the pool, or participate in a variety of leisure activities.

  5. Day 5 - Relaxed Start

Gelato in Siena and San Gimignano.

(Relaxed Start) In the morning, visit medieval Siena where narrow cobbled streets lined with palaces and patrician mansions, lead to Piazza del Campo, scene of the Palio horse race. Explore with your Local Expert and visit the beautifully-striped cathedral. Continue to hilltop San Gimignano, famous for its medieval towers that scrape the azure Tuscan sky. Ascend serpentine alleyways to the artisan ice-cream parlour of world champion gelato maestro, Sergio Dondoli, for a taste of his finest frozen treats. On return to your hotel, stop at a local winery to sample some of the robust red wines of Tuscany and learn about their origins.

  6. Day 6

The Chianti Hills to Pisa, Lucca and Santa Margherita.

Drive through the patchwork of vines, olives and cypresses that typify the Chianti hills. Head for Pisa and see the incredible Leaning Tower, from which Galileo is said to have conducted experiments on velocity and gravity. See the splendid cathedral and baptistery, decorated with mosaics and designs in solid marble, before continuing to the delightful town of Lucca. At a traditional steam bakery, taste the history in the lavish loaves of buccellato, Lucca's sweet raisin anise bread. Continue along the coast to the pretty seaside resort of Santa Margherita Ligure.

  7. Day 7

    The Cinque Terre.

Head for the port of La Spezia for a highlight of your travels, the Cinque Terre - a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Italy's most beautiful landscapes. With a Local Expert, appreciate the views as you approach one of the picturesque fishing villages by boat. There is time to explore the old medieval quarter or the popular sandy beach before returning to your hotel. With the afternoon at leisure, perhaps make the most of the hotel’s private beach before enjoying a delicious farm-to-table dining experience for dinner.

  8. Day 8 - Relaxed Start

    Portofino and onto Lake Maggiore.

(Relaxed Start) In the morning, should weather permit, cruise along the rugged Ligurian coast to the elegant seaside village of Portofino, epitome of la dolce vita. Enjoy leisure time to admire the coloured houses, browse the boutiques or simply stay a while in the cafe bars on the piazzetta, watching the yachts moored in the harbour. Next, return to the mainland and head north to the beautiful Italian Lake District, a favourite retreat of the rich and famous where Alpine scenery combines with lush subtropical vegetation.

  9. Day 9

Verona, the Dolomites and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

Journey to the town of fair Verona, legendary home of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy free time to admire the well-preserved Roman Arena still used for opera performances, or perhaps recite Shakespeare’s immortal words and get cozy with Juliet’s well-worn statue beneath the balcony where the Capulet family is said to have lived. Continue through the magnificent Dolomites, to the mountain resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo.

  10. Day 10 - Relaxed Start

    Experience the Dolomites.

(Relaxed Start) The whole day is free for you to explore the colourful peaks and sheer valleys of the Dolomites, one of the most impressive mountain ranges in the Alps. During summer, once the snow and ice have melted away, a breathtaking landscape is revealed. There are a number of walking tracks through pristine Alpine wilderness for the adventurous to explore, or for a more relaxed pace, perhaps take a thrilling cable car ride to the summit of one of the peaks for breathtaking 360-degree views.

  11. Day 11 - Relaxed Start

    Venice, Queen of the Adriatic.

(Relaxed Start) Descend through the mountains to the romantic city of Venice. A private launch ferries you past canals lined with ornate palaces to St Mark’s Square. See the basilica, the Doge's Palace and Bridge of Sighs, before checking into your intimate and luxurious hotel. With the afternoon at leisure, why not cruise the Venetian lagoon to the island of Burano for a meal of local specialties and wine?

  12. Day 12 - Relaxed Start

Venice and the Magic of La Serenissima

Mingle with the locals at the open air markets near the Rialto Bridge and explore the back lanes and squares where Venetians go about their day. Later, on your romantic gondola serenade, glide along the atmospheric canals exploring the intimate and hidden parts of this unique city while musicians set the mood with traditional songs. In the evening, toast the finale of your journey with good food, good wine and good company at your Celebration Dinner in a magical setting.

  13. Day 13

It was a great way to see the beautiful countryside of Italy without any stress. Will definitely take another Insight tour.

We have just arrived home from our first trip to Italy, spending 12 days on the Italian Elegance trip form Rome to Venice. We had a fantastic time, stayed at some lovely hotels, saw great sights and met lots of wonderful new friends on our tour. Bea our tour leader was fantastic, she was funny, interesting and gave us lots of knowledge in the places we visited. I would highly recommend traveling with an insight tour, you see all the best sight seeing, with local guides and avoid all the ques. All our activities were paid for before we left and all breakfasts and dinners, including 2 glasses of wine each night were all included. Everything is organised for you, you can just relax and enjoy the trip, no carrying all your bags to the room either, its all done for you. We will definitely book another insight tour.

We have just returned from an Insight tour, titled Italian Elegance Summer 2016. We found the whole experience wonderful. The places we visited were not only historical but quite beautiful. Our Coach was comfortable & well appointed with a very skilled driver and Tour Director. Most of the hotels we stayed in were 4 or 5 star, there were a couple that were not up to that rating, but the view from those hotels was spectacular. It has certainly given us a taste of Italy & the desire to go back and revisit some of the places we've seen & spend more time there. We will definitely use Insight again.

I want to thank you for my recent trip to Italy. It was wonderful. The other travellers on the trip were varied and from other countries. We all got on brilliantly. There were no worries on the trip and that was because of our guide Debra Donatelle who was always available to us. She has such a knowledge of Italy that was full of interesting facts for us. Add to that her great sense of humour. We all felt that we were important to her. Could you please pass on my thanks to her. Marie O'Shea, Italien Elegance Tour, 20 May.

  • Wonderful tour

    Niagara Falls (NY), United States

I recently returned from the Italian Elegance tour. This is a fantastic tour. The all-inclusive feature was what attracted me to this tour as well as the diversity of areas visited. I loved the fact that we visited the signature cities of Rome, Florence and Venice but that we also experienced the "back roads" of Italy-Tuscany, the Cinque Terre , lake country and the Dolomites. Our tour director, Frances Touschek, was an exceptional guide. His knowledge and enthusiasm made each spot we visited come alive for us. The hotels we stayed at were all very good. Their locations were either central to a city or in a scenic area. The meals were very good-usually 4 courses-and included wine of the region. The bus was very comfortable-lots of room between the seats. We had 34 on our tour and we never felt crowded on the bus. This was my first Insight tour, but I am sure it will not be my last. I do not hesitate to recommend touring with Insight.

    Buffalo, United States

I was very hesitant to go on a trip with a tour, as my husband and I like to do things/explore on our own, but after going with Insight I can't think of any other way I'd want to travel around Europe. We felt like we saw everything we wanted and really got a feel for the Italian culture, even more so than if we were to try to do everything on our own. Everything was taken care of for us from the moment we arrived so we could really focus on taking it all in and enjoying ourselves instead of worrying about luggage, transportation, etc. Our tour guide, Alison, was one of a kind and helped to make our trip that much more special. I would HIGHLY recommend traveling with Insight to anyone and hope to travel again with them soon!

This was our first coach tour and it won't be our last. "Italian Elegance", April 2015. The itinerary was incredible from the history of Rome to the magic of Venice and everything between. We loved it all and cannot pick just one standout. Our tour guide, Francis Touschek was unbelievably knowledgeable and passionate about his country. He definitely made this trip an experience we will never forget. We were a small group of 18 and over just a short 12 days we bonded as we shared the memories of Italy which we will never forget.

  • Exceeded Expectations

    5 out of 5

    Bonita Springs, United States

Our Italian Elegance Tour September 21, 2014 was more than we could have hoped for! My husband and I traveled with another couple, none of us ever having been to Italy. Our tour guide Alison Gatt set the tone for the trip and guided us skillfully through the most incredible cultural journey. Before reaching each destination, she would give us background and history with funny and interesting stories. Then she might pass out locally made candies while listening to music appropriate to the area. By the time we arrived, we were excited and actually knew what we were looking at. I have had cool reactions from friends when I told them we were planning a tour. Why would we want to be herded like cattle on a bus? Well, maybe because the coach was exceptionally roomy and comfortable. Maybe it was because we skipped the 2 hour line at the Vatican and walked immediately into our secret door. Perhaps it's because we we're told what we were looking at, which made us appreciate it much more. This was our first trip to Europe ( but not our last). There were NO worries. It was a seamless, fun and informative vacation and the absolute best time of my life! I could tell you how beautiful the hotels were. Or how great the the itinerary was. But you can read all that in the brochure. But I can tell you that every time we thought it could get no better, it did. Each day trumped the last. I cried so often at the sheer beauty of it all! Do not hesitate to book with Insight. They take the worry out of your holiday.

The Italian Elegance Tour was absolutely wonderful. It covered every thing you could hope to see in Italy going from the ocean, to lakes and then to the mountains covered with snow. Our tour guide was the most knowledgeable women ever, Lynn Meadows. She knew when to schedule tours so that we would get there before the crowds and made everyone on the tour feel so special. We had 25 on our tour and we all got along sooooo well. We acquired friends that we will never forget. We did all the optional excursions which were well worth the money. It was no stop from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM but we saw everything we possibly could. I can not say enough about the tour company, iteniary and guide!!!!

This was our first insight Tour and we went in with pretty high expectations. I'm pleased to say that all of our expectations were met. Francesca, our tour guide, was fabulous. The itinerary couldn't have been better and the little extras from Insight were very nice as well. All of the hotels were beautiful and in great locations. We were fortunate to have spectacular weather, and we had the best group of tour mates we could have hoped for. We will definitely be back.

We just returned from a Northern Elegance Tour of Italy. We had great weather which certainly influences our enjoyment, but overall the tour was wonderful. Liked the smaller numbers in the tour and the extra leg room on the bus. The scenery and tour stops were great. Lots if variety and good guides along the way who spoke English very well and were easy to understand. Some of the included dinners were not up to par, but others were outstanding. Out tour director was excellent. Good management skills, addressed our needs and was flexible when changes needed to be made. He was very knowlegible about the areas we visited.

  • Your tour director, Mario Mazzocchi, is your greatest asset!

    Saint Louis, United States

I loved my Insight tour, but your tour director, Mario, made the trip for everyone! Mario was so skillful with our group throughout the entire experience. He faced challenges with some of the tour members because of physical disabilities. He was the consummate professional, always, but he was also very engaging, instructive, and inclusive. I observed him in many situations and he commanded respect from all his peers. He made this trip flow seamlessly and greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the tour. His assistant, Mario, the bus driver, was flawless as well. The 2 Marios combined were a perfect blend for our trip. I feel the country is one I'll re-visit. This impression is largely due to the effect these 2 men contributed to our tour. I cannot congratulate you enough for having such exceptional men in your employ. Italy is a treasured destination but these individuals are your greatest treasure.

We chose the trip for its itinerary and were more than pleased. There was a "wow" moment or view at every location, beautiful views from our hotel rooms, and great optional excursions. We saw everything we wanted to see, and experienced it at our own pace. In addition, our tour director, Debra, kept us informed, entertained, and did everything she could to accommodate individual needs. Our expectations were met or exceeded. It was a dream trip! I just completed the Italian Elegance tour with tour director Karen. This was my first ever overseas trip and I went alone. (I am 61 and single) I joined the tour in Rome and had the most wonderful holiday. I was a bit nervous about going it alone but Karen put me at ease immediately. I met some great people on the tour and are still communicating with some now I am home. I wasn't ready to come home when the tour finished and I am busy planning my next one to France in 2014. The tour group were so friendly, we saw amazing places and each day was a surprise. I find it difficult to choose a highlight - because it was all a highlight but Tuscany and the Dolomites were spectacular. Susanb

This is the 6th Insight Vacations we had been on and we continued to love it. We really enjoyed this itinerary. We had been on the Best of Italy before but this tour let us experience the Lake districts and the Dolomites. We had the best of weather and even when we were up in the Alps, the sun came out for us. Learning about the WWI was a plus. But best of all was our tour director Beatrice Richichi. She was happy, funny, informative, and always got us local goodies to try. There was a little incident when we left Isola Bella, while we were touring the island one more time, I discovered I left my camera in a little shop where I bought hand crafted necklaces. I told Bea and she contacted her shop. The owner's daughter arranged to deliver the camera at the pier and the boat driver returned the boat to Isola Bella so Bea could get onshore to fetch me my camera. Thanks Bea again! In my opinion, she is the best tour director I ever had from Insight. We love having her as a tour director again. On a second note, does Insight have a tier system for your repeat customers? Some cruise lines use the number of days of travel, some use the number of cruise. As we become a frequent traveler, we get perks, like deeper discount, cabin upgrade, and invites to special events. What does Insight Vacations offer?

This was our first holiday in Europe and one that has left us clamouring for more. From the moment we arrived in Rome until our final day in Venice we were in the capable hands of our tour director,Mick, who impressed us with his knowledge of Roman history, his organisational skills and his humour. We visited many wonderful places, sharing experiences with a great bunch of fellow travellers. The accommodation and included meals were of a high quality. There were no negatives for us on this Insight tour and we would definitely recommend it to others.
