Serbia

In the Balkans, in Southern Europe, lies Serbia. Sitting at the crossroads of Europe’s history, this land-locked nation is a fusion cultures and religions, resulting in a wealth of joie de vivre. Enjoy the national parks and quirky festivals in the summer, and when the snow settles in winter, take to the mountains’ ski resorts.

Belgrade – meaning ‘white city’ – is undoubtedly one of the most bustling cities in Europe. This cosmopolitan capital is home to culture, palaces and sights in excess. Enjoy a sidewalk ice-cream as you stroll along the riverbank and take in some of the city’s religious and military history at one of the city’s many museums. In the evening, head to the pedestrianised Skadarska street, brimming with restaurants and cafes, where old Belgrade music can be heard live and walls to the south are painted with impressive 'trompe-l'oeil' paintings. To top it off, why not enjoy one of the city’s floating nightclubs? Just be sure to catch a glimpse of Ada Bridge at night before you leave.

Another city worth ticking off is the characteristic Novi Sad. Head north to discover Serbia’s second largest city straddling the river Danube. Take in the dominating sight of Petrovaradin Fortress and stroll through the historic Stari Grand to enjoy its plethora of museums, eateries, shops and laneway bars.

Wherever you decide to go, you’ll find that Serbians are very welcoming and hospitable. They will likely enjoy practising their English on you too so make sure you carve a little time for conversation. View more trips to Serbia.

Try to learn a few phrases to use on your vacation. It's amazing how far a 'hello' or 'thank you' will go with the locals - your Travel Director will be around to help if you get stuck.
